So, you think you’re ready to start a crochet business of your own? How exciting!
But did you get that anxious feeling in the pit of your stomach when I said that? Don’t worry. It’s entirely natural to feel apprehensive when launching your new handmade business venture!
However, before you actually start a crochet business, you should make sure you have the following in order to succeed.
By the end of this post, that nervous feeling will be ancient history!
#1. Your Crocheting Skills Are Top-Notch
This one will seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t take the time to master their craft before deciding to turn their crocheting hobby into a business.
It’s important to accurately assess your skill level and make sure your technique matches or exceeds your competition before you sink all your time and money into a crocheting business. If you’re an expert crocheter, great! You’re ready to move on down the list. If not, invest your energy into becoming a crochet master before you decide to start a crochet business.

#2. You Have a Well-Defined Niche
Before opening an Etsy shop, it’s important to have a clear idea of what you’ll be selling. Ask yourself:
- Do I specialize in a specific type of crochet product (e.g., amigurumi, home décor, wearables)?
- Do I have multiple product variations or styles to offer?
- Have I (and/or others!) tested my designs for durability, comfort, and quality?
Having a strong, cohesive product line or collection will make your shop feel professional and giving customers just enough options to choose from without being overwhelmed.
#3. You Can Work Efficiently and Meet Deadlines
Would you call yourself a natural organizer? That’s okay, few people are, but you can get a grip on your time management and plan the time needed to create your handmade crocheted products.
For example, you sell handmade scarves and it takes you 6 hours to crochet each one. In order to fulfill an order for 10 scarves, you’d need approximately 60 hours of crocheting – plan accordingly and be upfront about your timeline to avoid disappointing your customer’s expectations!
Running a crochet business means managing multiple orders, keeping track of inventory, and meeting deadlines—especially if you offer made-to-order items. If crocheting takes you an extremely long time or you struggle to stay organized, it may be helpful to refine your workflow before launching.
Ask yourself:
- How long does it take me to complete one product?
- Can I handle multiple orders at once?
- Do I have a system for tracking inventory and supplies?
If you’re confident in your ability to meet customer expectations, you’re one step closer to being Etsy-ready when you decide to start a crochet business!
#4. Learn the Basics of Pricing and Profit Margins
Many crochet business owners struggle with pricing their work fairly. It’s important to charge enough to cover material costs, time, Etsy fees, and shipping while still making a profit.
To test if your pricing is sustainable, calculate:
- Cost of yarn and materials
- Time spent making each product – it’s up to you to determine the hourly rate you want to charge
- Etsy listing, transaction, and payment processing fees
- Shipping and packaging expenses
- Your desired profit margin
If your prices allow you to make a reasonable profit without undercharging yourself, you’re ready to list your products on Etsy! Don’t forget to shop around on Etsy and other online (and in-person) craft marketplaces to check out competitors’ rates – if yours are significantly higher or lower you’ll probably want to make some adjustments (or make it clear to customers why your items are worth more!) Crocheting as a hobby is fine, but the objective of a business is to make money – the primary objective to keep in mind when you start a crochet business!
#5. Take High-Quality Photos of Your Work
Since Etsy is an online marketplace, customers can’t touch or see your products in person before purchasing—they rely on photos to decide whether to buy. If you have clear, well-lit images that showcase your crochet pieces beautifully, your shop will have a much better chance of success.
Your photos should:
- Use natural lighting or a lightbox for clarity
- Show different angles and close-up details
- Feature neutral or aesthetically pleasing backgrounds
- Include lifestyle shots (e.g., a blanket draped over a couch)
If you’re confident in your photography skills or are willing to invest in learning, you’re one step closer to launching. Surf the web to discover free apps and online articles to brush up on your amateur photography skills.
#6. Plan the Time to Dedicate to Your Business – Get Your Family On Board
Sometimes when we’re feeling nervous about a new part of our life, we clam up and avoid talking about it in case our loved ones inadvertently make us feel even more nervous!
That’s very understandable, but launching your own crochet business will need a significant time investment, so it’s best to get your family on board to help you carve out some free time to devote to your new business.
Going into Etsy entrepreneurship on your own turns the potential molehill into your own Everest.
Let other people support you! Whether they take on additional chores to free up some time for you or just provide a supportive sounding board, let your loved ones be there for you!
#7. Learn About Marketing (and Etsy)
I can see you scrambling for a pen. Thank goodness we had this talk.
Have you sorted out your marketing strategy yet? Success on Etsy isn’t just about having great products—you also need to understand how Etsy’s search algorithm works and how to market your shop. Are you open to learning about:
- Etsy SEO (using the right keywords in titles, descriptions, and tags)
- Social media promotion (Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok, or YouTube)
- Customer service and branding
If you’re excited about the business side of things and willing to adapt, you’re more than ready to begin!
#8. You Have a Positive and Resilient Mindset
Bear with me; this one will sound a little out there.
When you’re getting ready for opening up your own crochet shop, it can be easy to focus on the never-ending to-do list.
However, putting all your focus outwards means you forget to focus on your inner mindset.
By ensuring you’re not leaving your positivity by the wayside, you know whether you’re still moving in the right direction.
Here are some things to ask yourself to determine if your inner self is sufficiently calm and confident:
- Am I passionate about crochet and willing to push through challenges?
- Do I see this as a long-term commitment rather than a quick way to make money?
- Am I excited about growing my brand and learning from experience?
If you answered yes, you have the mindset needed to start a crochet business of your very own.
